Purata’s approach to antibiotic stewardship on the world stage.

Purata’s approach to antibiotic stewardship on the world stage.

On the 28th of September 2016, Purata Farming’s General Manager of farm operations, Andy Millar, addressed the 4th International Conference on Responsible Use of Antibiotics in Animals to discuss the work that we have been doing to better manage our use of antibiotics. The conference, held in The Hague in the Netherlands, is an independent initiative to highlight global activities in the field of antibiotic use in animals and antimicrobial resistance in animals and humans.

Purata developed an antimicrobial stewardship plan in 2014 in line with our future focused ideal of Farming for Tomorrow. This was recognised as a world leading initiative and drew interest from many of the participants from Europe, the USA and Asia.

Since the instigation of this plan Purata Farming has halved the number of doses of antibiotic given to our animals. Not only reducing risk around antibiotic resistance development but delivering a better outcome to Purata’s bottom line.

Much of Purata’s stewardship plan has been incorporated into the quality assurance programme promoted by Synlait Milk Ltd’s (the Lead with Pride Programme) and it has been used as an example in national initiatives to engage dairy farmers and veterinarians to better use and manage antibiotics.
